A Tallis Anthem is an opening work or concert work for concert band. It is based on If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis. He was one of the first to set the Rites of the Anglican Church on English words. If Ye Love Me is a classic example of the new English anthems: mainly homophonic, but with short moments of imitation.
The opening is a triumphant version of the first homophonic verses of the song, interrupted by a calm melody based on a motif from the original. The anthem is played by a quartet that can stand in front of the orchestra or elsewhere in the hall. This is followed by a modern anthem that leads to a triumphant conclusion.
