The year 2025 once again brought a wealth of new music to GJK Music. A diverse collection of new works for concert band, fanfare band, and brass band, written with an eye for sound, story, and the joy of playing. Music that goes beyond notes and invites orchestras to share a story.
Reflections out of the Blue for Brass Band - Maurice Borchers
This brass band work is narrative and melodic in nature, with a reflective undertone that slowly creeps under the skin. The warm brass tones convey a sense of burning nostalgia—authentic, vulnerable, and bittersweet.
The music takes the listener on a sentimental journey; powerful yet questioning outbursts transform the melancholic theme into a captivating climax. This makes the work eminently suitable as the highlight of a modern concert program and powerful enough to be a compelling performance at championship matches.
Blue for Brass Band - Geert Jan Kroon
An opening that immediately sets the tone. Blue is a spectacular and modern brass band piece, with audible influences from Olivier Messiaen. Rhythmically sharp, harmonically challenging, and written to make an immediate impression—on stage and with the listener.
This piece came about in a unique way: as a prize for a friendly pub quiz at the PBG. What began as a playful challenge grew into a powerful concert and competition piece that truly demands attention.
Heritage Ouverture for Brass Band
History that resonates. Heritage Ouverture is a grandly conceived opening work that blends tradition with a distinctive musical identity. Subtle references to Lobe den Herren are interwoven with a specially composed hymn based on the name of the village of Beetgummermolen.
The result is a classically inspired, challenging overture that works perfectly as a long opening or as a standalone main work in a concert program. The special arrangement also creates additional visual dynamism on stage.
Centum Anni Vitalis for Fanfare Band - Geert Jan Kroon
Stately, festive, and with historical depth. Centum Anni Vitalis is an opening work for fanfare, based on Rhuddlan and enriched with classical influences. A powerful fugue and a solemn opening ensure that the audience is fully immersed in the music from the very first bars.
This work is perfectly suited to grandly open a concert program and immediately establish a clear atmosphere.
Verissimus for Brass Band - Geert Jan Kroon
Grand, captivating, and full of suspense. Verissimus breathes the Roman world surrounding Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Monumental blocks of sound, dramatic arcs of tension, and clear influences from the Pini di Roma make this work an impressive concert piece.
Written to conclude Carlton Main Frickley's Brass in Concert program, this work builds relentlessly towards a stunning conclusion.
Glory of the Guard for Brass Band - Geert Jan Kroon
Fast-paced, exciting, and ceremonial. Glory of the Guard is an opening piece based on the regimental march and written for the annual concert of the Regimental Fanfare Garde Grenadiers en Jagers.
This piece functions perfectly as a concert opener, but also comes into its own after the intermission or as an energetic closing performance. The music exudes pride, precision, and movement—exactly what you want to hear and feel during a powerful brass band performance.
